Round Rock schools launch new security system
By QUITA CULPEPPER / KVUE News, Monday, August 14, 2006

As the fall semester begins, visitors to Round Rock schools will notice some big changes, starting with school security.

In the past, visitors would just sign in, but now some schools are launching a new security system.

It's called "Raptor V-Soft" and it is similar to one already used in the Eanes School District.

Eleven Round Rock schools already have the system in place. The others will get it by the spring.

The Raptor V-Soft requires visitors to provide a driver's license before entering the school.

The license is then scanned and compared with a data base of sex offenders in Texas and 47 other states.

It then prints a photo ID visitor’s pass.

"Additionally it has a private alert system so if there are individuals that have a restraining order against them or if there's a custody dispute we can know specifically who is allowed to pick up children and who's not," said Willa Rosen Round Rock ISD Safe Schools Supervisor.

It will cost about $15,000 per campus to install the new security system. A federal grant is paying for the new security system. So far, feedback from parents has been positive. They say they appreciate the additional safety measure.

--- CORRECTION: THE V-SOFT SYSTEM IS $1,500 PER CAMPUS, NOT $15,000
