North Idaho Schools Target Sex Offenders
KXLY, Channel 4 ABC, Spokane, WA

August 5, 2005 – Two North Idaho school districts are installing new security systems that will check visitors' identification against sex offender registries from Idaho and 41 other states.

The Lakeland and Post Falls school districts will begin using the program this fall.

Volunteers, parents, vendors and all other visitors must present their drivers' license to a school employee who will run the background check.

School officials say the recent attacks on children by registered sex offenders in North Idaho has accelerated their plans to install the systems, which cost about $1,800 to set up and $400 a year to maintain.

The Coeur d'Alene School District tells News4 it is considering a similar system.
